A letter from Helen Devos Childrens Hospital:
I want to thank you again for participating in our Change Bandit program and helping to raise over $1,000 to support our kids at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital! To give you some perspective on the importance of this gift, every year over 1,500 infants are admitted into our Gerber Foundation Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It’s hard to imagine, but at just 23 weeks – less than 6 months - a newborn can survive and thrive. Some of these children weigh less than a pound and can fit in the palm of their mother’s hand.
We do our best to create a comforting and nurturing environment that mimics the warm, safe environment of a mother’s womb. Through philanthropy, we are able to purchase and use special state-of-the-art incubator beds known as giraffe beds to protect the babies from cold, noise and light. In addition, we clothe the child with onesies and often times micro-preemie diapers. These diapers are literally smaller than doll diapers. The average stay of care is 23 days before most children are able to be sent home with mom and dad. $10 is enough to purchase a package of onesies for these babies; $15 a package of these specialty diapers. Your gift is helping to make sure that babies stay warm and start their new life off right. For this, we are truly grateful for your support.
This year, I’m happy to announce that we have something new and exciting to offer our credit unions - preemie pigs! These baby bandits complement their adult counter-parts and will offer a new point of conversation with your guests and members about the value of supporting the children’s hospital and caring for life in its most tender moment. Please let me know if Rivertown Community Federal Credit Union is interested in recommitting to this program and ‘adopting’ some baby bandits.
Thanks again for all you do. We look forward to a strong, ongoing partnership with Rivertown Community Federal Credit Union!
